A number of students from South Shore Academy enjoyed an experience of a lifetime on Sunday 11th February. They were chosen by the PE Department to attend the football fixture between Newcastle United and Manchester United and a full day of activities hosted by Newcastle United. The day started from 6am with a three hour Journey to Newcastle. When we arrived at the Newcastle United training complex we were greeted by the Newcastle United Academy coaches who had organised some excellent activities for the students to take part in, using their great facilities.
After the morning’s activities we then headed off to St James’ Park for some lunch in their hospitality area and shortly after this seven students headed off to be ball boys for the day. The ball boys had an experience of a lifetime as not only were they rubbing shoulders with some of the “most expensive footballers in world football”, they stood on the pitch during the opening ceremony and were then placed around pitch side during the entire 90 minutes. The students and staff had a fantastic day and we all agreed this was an opportunity of a lifetime.
Mr Horrocks, Head of PE, said “This trip was fantastic from start to finish. We all had a great time. The coaching session prior to the match, laid on by the Newcastle United FC coaching staff, was fantastic. It also helped build up the appetite for a nice pre-match lunch inside one of the St James’ suites. Seven students got a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with the players and managers in their jobs as ball boys for the day. We had great seats and it is a day I think the pupils will treasure and never forget. A great experience for staff and pupils alike.”
