Drop Everything and Read is the latest Literacy initiative at South Shore Academy. Its aim is to create a reading culture, promote reading for pleasure and ultimately to improve outcomes. Every week for twenty minutes the whole academy stop whatever they are doing and read silently something of their own choice. The designated time is on a rota in order that curriculum time is not taken from the same subject repeatedly.
Students are encouraged to bring their own book, newspaper or magazine but each classroom has a small capsule library of common books to enable students to continue the same book from week to week. Additional funding has been assigned to purchase current titles, easy reads and some dyslexia friendly texts.
Mrs Fellows who has been coordinating the project said “Students have responded positively to Drop Everything and Read so far and have expressed a refreshing enthusiasm for reading”.
