29th June 2017

Pupils from Year 9 were invited by Blackpool Arts Council to take part in an Arts Award, linked to the creative area of Dance. The pupils selected took part in a 2 day session in the sports gym to compile a contemporary dance routine with the lead teacher Sarah Hall, who owns Blue Moose Dance Company based in the North West. The group performed individually, within pairs and as large groups, developing their own dance routines to come together as one. Pupils worked on the influences and main themes within one of the bestselling young adult fiction books ‘Geek Girl’ by Holly Smales. The pupils worked hard as a group to create and develop the themes within their routine, ensuring a literacy link aided their movements and travel within the routine.

The following week on Thursday 22nd June a few additional pupils from Year 10 were invited to attend and take part in a Literacy Workshop/Timehop event called Wordpool.  The event took place at the Winter Gardens in the Spanish Hall with pupils from Hodgson Academy, Lytham St Annes High School, Arnold KEQMS and Blackpool and Fylde College working and sharing experiences alongside South Shore Academy.  The groups met many young adult fiction authors including Peadar O’Guilin, Kerry Drewery, Elizabeth Wein, Alice Broadway and ‘Geek Girl’ author Holly Smale. Some of the pupils also attended a digital workshop with Digienable.

All pupils and staff had a wonderful day.
