Students study the ten ‘big ideas’ of science: forces, waves, matter, organisms, reactions, genes, electromagnets, Earth science, ecosystems and energy in a spiral curriculum from year 7 to year 11. Students develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, techniques, and procedures before applying them to unfamiliar contexts.
Students also learn to analyse information and ideas to make judgements, draw conclusions, develop and improve experimental procedures. Students are entered for AQA GCSE science courses. AQA triple science is studied as an option. Students not opting for triple science follow AQA combined science or entry level science to provide a comprehensive curriculum offer for students of all abilities. Students progress to study A level sciences or BTEC level 3 in Applied Science before entering a career in a science related occupation.
The science curriculum will support and raise the aspirations of students ensuring that South Shore Academy contributes significantly to the next generation of science professionals at all levels.
