Last week at South Shore Academy, eighteen year 8 students took part and completed a joinery taster course. The course was delivered through a Blackpool and Fylde initiative and sponsored by Travis Perkins, who supplied all the wood and PPE for the course. The students were tasked with a development project to run in conjunction with the year 8 eco team. The eco team have been developing a garden at the academy and the joinery course task was to create four various sized planters the eco team could use.
The students learnt valuable employability soft skills such as teamwork, collaboration, communication, and leadership. This was also alongside the primary aim of learning the basic skills of joinery as well as having plenty of fun!
All students involved represented the Academy with distinction and all behaviour throughout the two days was impeccable. The two joiners delivering the workshops were extremely complimentary about all the boys and impressed by their levels of focus, hard work and competitiveness to produce the best planter box. The picture above is of group 2 who won the overall prize for the best finished product. Below are a few more pictures of the boys throughout the day’s workshops.
